What Is The Long Term Effect Of Dehydration On The Body?

Most people assume that they are getting enough water, but the reality is that many of us are not getting enough water for optimal health. Years of sustained dehydration, even minimal, can really begin to effect your overall health, and lead to long term chronic illness and disease. The key to longevity and a good quality of life is supplying the body with the essential minerals found in water, and in the abundance required.

Abnormal loss of fluids

Dehydration is defined as not having enough fluid in the body. It is a condition where what is lost through body processes is more than what is replenished. Because the body works optimally in a perfect state of balance, it is important that you have the right electrolyte balance which can only be achieved through the right nutrient concentrations in the body. When you lose water, you also lose electrolytes. If you don’t compensate through rehydrating your body, you are creating an imbalance which is very unhealthy for your body.

Small children and babies are especially susceptible to dehydration because they have a quicker turnover rate of electrolytes and water. For them, any changes to the fluctuation in fluid intake, can be dangerous. That also applies to the elderly and chronically ill who may have fluid deficients that can exasperate long standing health conditions.

Chronic vs. Acute dehydration

Chronic dehydration is different from acute dehydration. When you have acute water loss it is something that is timely. Usually brought on by a specific event such as being sick, or excessive exercise, it is a single event that leads to the depletion of water in the body.

Chronic dehydration is something that is more of a way of life. It is when someone does not replenish appropriately the water that is lost keeping the body in a state of imbalance for long periods of time. Overtime the body, not having enough water available, begins to redistribute fluids in non-productive ways which can lead to disease and illness. When the body is not given enough of what it needs, it will adjust how it can, that can lead to excessive damage at some level. When the body has to ration water, critical functions are sometimes put on hold for extended periods of time.

That type of deprivation will lead to illness and disease. It can result in asthma, high blood pressure, digestive disorders or other conditions which are chronic in the body. To allow the body to work as it was intended, it is imperative that you supply it with the tools that it needs to operate. If you are not giving your body enough water to maintain balance, you can be setting yourself up for long term, and chronic health conditions. Supplying the body with dehydration which contains the proper amount of nutrients is imperative for a long and healthy life.
