There is nothing that we put into our bodies that is more important than the water we drink. Water is one of the only nutrients that we can’t live without. Being so crucial to our survival, the type of water that we consume can alter our health and quality of life. Not many people consider how important the purity of the water they drink is, nor do they understand the ways in which water is filtered. Most of the bottled water that we drink is produced through the process of reverse osmosis. If you are considering a filtration system for your home, and reverse osmosis is one of the systems you are researching, it has both pros and cons to use.
What is reverse osmosis?
Reverse osmosis is a type of filtration that is complex. Essentially, it uses a semipermeable membrane to selectively weed out harmful molecules and ions from the water that we drink. Using a pressurized system, it strips the water from the particles that it contains. Being one of the most cost-effective, and reliable ways to remove contaminants from drinking water, it is a viable option to clean your tap water and make it more healthy to drink.
What are the disadvantages of reverse osmosis?
Although good at taking contaminants from the water we drink, reverse osmosis does have some negatives. In the process of removing the harmful things in our drinking water, it also removes those things which are essential to our bodies. Stripping the water from agents that are harmful to us, it also takes away the very minerals that the body needs to function optimally. The product of reverse osmosis can produce “dead water”. When we speak of dead water, we are describing drinking water that is devoid of minerals that enhance our health. There are other ways to get those minerals such as through supplementation, or from other sources. Which is why it is still a great option for your home if you are willing to go the extra mile and substitute in what is being lost.
Because it works by singling out molecules, it is not capable of filtering the tiniest of molecules, such as those which are found in herbicides, pesticides and chlorine which are harmful to the body. That means that although you are able to filter out the major contaminants in your drinking water, there are still going to be agents that remain which are harmful to your health. It is not 100% effective at purifying your water, but it does one of the most thorough jobs of ridding water from harmful substances of any other filtration system on the market.
Is reverse osmosis right for you?
If you are considering installing a reverse osmosis system in your home, the fact remains that although taking some essential minerals from your tap water, and not being able to be 100% effective, it is a much better option than doing nothing at all. The key to your health is water, make sure you are taking steps to make it as health beneficial as possible.
