Unless you are living under a rock you have no doubt heard about the ice-water bucket challenge that is overtaking the media world. Matt Damon is putting a new spin on the fundraising efforts to bring awareness to the scarcity of water around the world. Being a long time advocate for environmental initiatives, he is attempting to bring to the forefront of the average American’s consciousness the notion that fresh water is not something that everyone around the world is blessed, or privy, to. Many individuals around the world are not only in continual search for an adequate supply of water, everyday over 6000 children die worldwide from drinking, or bathing in contaminated water. Water borne illness takes the lives of millions per year and is something that Mr. Damon believes that we as a society don’t have enough understanding about.
To take up the cause of drought conditions around the world, and in California, the star decided to bring awareness by using the coinciding campaign of the ice bucket challenge with his own agenda. He didn’t pick up the water hose for demonstration, to be more edgy, he reached for toilet water. All for charity, Damon doused his body with toilet water to raise funds for ALS and awareness of the growing crisis that fresh drinking water will pose for us in the future.
Explaining that Western nations have no understanding of the roadblocks or hurdles of other nations in an effort to find fresh drinking water, he attempted to show that the water that we find most vile, that which comes from our toilets, is more healthful, less contaminated and fresher than most waterways located around the globe. The water that we flush our, you know what with, is cleaner than the water that most developing countries feed to their children out of necessity.
Although shocking to most of us, and quite disgusting to boot, his demonstration was one that hit home for many A-listers who have so much affluence and think little about the little man’s plight. Everyday 800 million people worldwide do not have enough safe drinking water to sustain life. That made Damon feel a little wrong about pouring fresh water over his head. He opted instead to make a true statement about the state of our water supplies and to do something shocking to catch all of our attention. Well, it did, and we are all listening now.
Usually celebrities are trying to outdo one another for the attention of their fans and for self promotion. Accolades to Matt Damon who is willing to put his toilet water over himself to bring attention not for himself, but for populations everywhere who don’t have the water to keep their children safe and hydrated. As Americans we are spoiled by the convenience of our abundance. Flushing water down the toilet, literally, we show our misunderstanding for what other people around the world have to endure for just one cup of water to sustain their own lives, and that of their families.
